The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the educational landscape is constantly increasing. According to a recent survey by Bitkom, 51% of teachers have already used AI for school purposes. AI tools such as ChatGPT, FieteAI or SchulKI play an important role - be it in knowledge transfer, lesson planning or preparation for exams. However, despite the growing use, there are also reservations and uncertainties, particularly regarding student abuse and the ethical implications.
WHY USE AI IN THE CLASSROOM?
The benefits of AI in the education sector are many. AI can support teachers by taking over administrative tasks and thereby freeing up more time for teaching. Tasks such as automated assessment of exams or the creation of personalized learning plans are just a few examples. According to the Bitkom survey, 86% of teachers see increased motivation among students through the use of digital technologies. At the same time, it is emphasized that the use of AI will better prepare students for life and work in the digital world.
CHALLENGES AND ETHICAL CONCERNS
Despite the opportunities, the use of AI also presents challenges. Many teachers are concerned that students could misuse AI to complete their tasks without actively going through the learning process. These uncertainties are understandable, especially since only 9% of teachers believe they can reliably recognize when a homework assignment has been completed with the help of AI.
Another topic is the ethical responsibility when dealing with AI. Prejudices in the algorithms and the lack of transparency in data processing are legitimate points of criticism that are often discussed. It is therefore important to establish clear guidelines and ethical standards for the use of AI in teaching.
HOW CAN TEACHERS BE SUPPORTED?
In order to optimally prepare teachers for dealing with AI, practice-oriented training and extensive resources are required. Edu-Ai-lliance is committed to exactly this: by providing free teaching materials, tutorials and webinars, the aim is to make it easier for teachers to access AI and promote exchanges with colleagues. Our vision is to create an educational alliance that uses AI as a tool for personal and academic development while ensuring responsible use of this technology.
AI IS THE FUTURE BUT...
AI will continue to transform education in the coming years. However, the results of the Bitkom survey show that it is crucial to take teachers along on this journey. Through targeted support and building a strong network, AI can help make education more efficient and accessible without neglecting the human aspect in the classroom.
